no more whining

Hey kids. This winter’s been pretty awful for me, but things are starting to look up a bit! My projects keep getting delayed, but I won’t give up on them. I will finish them eventually and everything will work out great.

That’s all I’ll say for now.

This is a mock up for Greshqa, a character for a comic about god(s), space(?), and feelings. She’s a mage, and in this futuristic world wands are shaped like guns because it’s more efficient or something.

I guess technically she’s not a magical girl because she won’t be yelling ‘henshin~~~!!’ every fight, but whatevs dawg.

This comic with hopefully be part of a new all-ages serialized anthology in the same vein as Shojo Beat, with periodic (???) chapters in phonebook-style rags like the ones Koshi Kawachi likes to use. It’ll be thick with the works of me, Cathy G. Johnson, and like ten other hyper cool friends (I’m not sure who’s definitely on board yet, so don’t be mad if I skipped you, bud)! I’m going to try to make my comic for cool kids aged 14 and up, so don’t tell you mom if you have it in your backpack.

I’m not sure when this will come together so stayed tuned. Probably won’t be for a long while, but I know sketches are already being made.

In other news, no webcomic yet because I haven’t moved. When it goes up you’ll hear about it, promise.

So, does anyone have suggestions for Greshqa’s costume? Maybe a goofy hood or a sweet hat?

This is my general process for creating work. I tend to storyboard anything larger than a page long and do preliminary layout work on comics that aren’t oriented on a grid. I like to sit on the storyboard for a while to make sure I actually like the dialogue and shots.

For this page I used a Prismacolor 03 fine line marker, the brush side of a Prismacolor double-sided marker, and a light blue Marvy LePen on plain copy paper. I extracted the blue channel on Paint.net because OPEN-SOURCE.

I’m a big fan of using really cheap materials. I’m not really into drawing with a tablet, but I’m practicing. I do color with it if the mood strikes me.

This page isn’t even done, as there aren’t any backgrounds drawn in yet, nor have I gotten around to applying the tones. I just wanted to check how the lines were since it gets a little hard for me to see what I’m doing after a while. Too much blue on the paper…

I’ll make this post (or one similar to it) its own page somewhere that is easy to get to in case anyone gets curious.

Yes’m. I decided to add more endings (read: deaths), updated some character designs, and made the story pull together much better.

I’m super, super happy with it has become, and I’m confident that I’ll actually like what I bring to CAKE now.

This is a character I made up for my comics workshop at New Urban Arts. Most of my students seem to be into the idea of making a mini out of a DnD style campaign.

Right now all of the characters (minus two dopes) just escaped from an admittedly poorly-guarded prison. The crime? Robbing a toy store.

What should happen next?

Hey dorks. New web comic in a week or so when I am done moving and finish figuring out some character and story stuff. I’m really trying to exit my comfort zone and grow with this one.
